PSV vs.FC Twente

Match preview

PSV extended their lead at the top of the league standings to seven points last week – although they played a game more than the sides directly below them – by beating Utrecht 5-2 on the road.

Ismael Saibari got the first goal in the 12th minute and then got another one in the second half. Guus Til also got two goals, one after Johan Bakayoko scored.

That result marked the fifth consecutive win for Peter Bosz's side across all competitions. During that run, they found the back of the net 20 times, including three or more goals in each victory.

In league terms, the 5-2 result meant that the Boeren kept up their record of scoring two or more goals in every match this season. It also took their tally to 50 in the top flight, 18 more than the second-highest scorers, Feyenoord, on 32.

Next, the league leaders face Twente, a side they've beaten in their last four matches across all competitions. The last time they played was in September 2022, when Twente beat them 2-1 at De Grolsch Veste.

While Twente haven't done well in this fixture recently, they can take some comfort from the fact that they were the only side to leave a league match at Philips Stadion last season having conceded fewer than two goals. In fact, they were the first to do so since January 2023.

However, the Tukkers will be hoping for better this time, as they head into the match with strong momentum and confidence following a great comeback against Go Ahead Eagles last weekend.

Sam Lammers put the side in the lead just before half-time, and Sem Steijn equalised midway through the second period. Bas Kuipers then scored the winning goal inside the final 10 minutes.

That brings Steijn's goal tally for the season to 10, which is the most in the top flight so far. The 23-year-old attacker will now face his closest rival for the top spot, Ricardo Pepi, who is just one behind him.

Joseph Oosting's side are on a three-game unbeaten streak in away league games, winning two and drawing one. They've also picked up 13 points across their six outings this season (W4 D1 L2).

Team News

Hirving Lozano had a great start to the season, scoring four goals and providing one assist in his first four matches. Unfortunately, he sustained a muscle injury that kept him out for over two months.

The Mexican picked up another assist last week against Utrecht, and he'll be looking to keep building his form and fitness before heading to San Diego FC at the start of the winter transfer window.

Joey Veerman was back with the squad last week after a spell out, so the only long-term absentee is Sergino Dest. Jerdy Schouten, Adamo Nagalo and Couhaib Driouech are all still a bit doubtful, though.

The visitors were without central defender Mees Hilgers and left-back Anass Salah-Eddine for the win against Go Ahead Eagles due to a reported 'overload', so it's unclear if they'll be available for this one.

Midfielder Younes Taha is still out for Twente with a shin injury. It's thought he'll be back in first-team training in February.
