Pedro Neto was instrumental in our Premier League fixtures prior to the international break, notably setting up Nicolas Jackson’s opener against Newcastle and then firing us level in the draw with Arsenal. It is proof of the attacker’s growing confidence and importance to the team.
That Arsenal goal was Neto’s first for us in the league, and he chose a fantastic moment to produce it in front of the Matthew Harding Stand and with the Blues trailing to our local rivals.
It is now three months since Neto joined from Wolves and so he is well placed to analyse his start to life at Stamford Bridge, which recently has seen him force his way into our Premier League starting XI.
‘At the beginning I was with the mentality I had to improve my physicality,’ he says.
‘When I arrived I hadn’t had a really good pre-season. I almost didn’t have one. I came from the European Championships with an injury, so when I arrived I had to be patient, and I had to work on myself.
‘I got to a good shape and I hope to continue to improve. I hope to arrive in my best shape that is yet to come, so that is my main goal at the moment.’
Neto says the demands and the size of the club are what separates Chelsea from Wolves, and the players’ and Enzo Maresca’s mentality are helping accelerate our growth as a team.
Neto is determined to help Chelsea return to the very top of the game. When asked who his Blues hero was growing up, he chooses a player that was pivotal to two Premier League triumphs in the last decade.
‘Eden Hazard, because of his relevance on the pitch, his way of playing, one against one, his natural positions on the pitch, and the way he dribbles,’ reveals Neto.
‘He was the one I looked up when I watched Chelsea.’
Now Neto wants to continue making his own mark and inspiring others.
