Arsenal are looking to make another "Martin Odegaard case" happen with an initial loan move for Real Madrid outcast Arda Güler. This season, Güler hasn't had much playing time at Real Madrid, while Arsenal are interested in a winter loan move. The Gunners previously took Odegaard off Los Blancos, and they're hoping to do the same with this Turkish talent.
Back in 2015, Real Madrid got their hands on the highly sought-after teenage Odegaard, beating some of Europe's top clubs to the punch. However, he had trouble making it into Real Madrid's star-studded midfield, which included Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro, and spent several periods on loan.
Arsenal saw an opportunity and brought the Norwegian midfielder to the Emirates Stadium on loan in the winter of 2021. They signed him permanently for €40 million (£34m/$47m) six months later. Odegaard has really come into his own under Mikel Arteta, becoming a key player and even the club's captain.
According to Sport, the Gunners are now hoping to repeat their success with Güler, a 19-year-old Turkish prodigy who wowed during Euro 2024. However, his huge potential has mostly gone untapped at Real Madrid, where he's only played 307 minutes of first-team football across 12 appearances.
Güler joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 from Fenerbahce for €20m, signing a contract that ties him to the club until 2029. However, his lack of game time has led to rumours about his future, with reports suggesting that the player is getting frustrated with his lack of involvement.
Arsenal's interest comes at a time when Güler might be looking for more regular playing time elsewhere. A loan move could be a great way for him to show what he can do in the Premier League, and for Arsenal to see if he's a good fit for their squad before they make a long-term commitment.
Given his creative flair and technical abilities, Güler could really flourish under Arteta's guidance and add some depth to Arsenal's midfield options. However, Real Madrid see him as a potential Galactico and are unlikely to want to let him go. On top of that, with games coming up thick and fast, Ancelotti will rotate a lot in the second half of the season, which will eventually create chances for Güler to show what he can do.
