Astros $119 million All-Star could cut ties with Houston in favor of Yankees

The Houston Astros failed to reach the World Series in 2024. After being a consistent force in the American League they failed to even reach the American League Championship Series. They will have a big decision to make in free agency regarding Alex Bregman.

While listing potential suitors for Bregman, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand named the New York Yankees as a team that could steal Bregman from the Astros.

"Bregman has been part of the Houston core that has beaten the Yankees in the ALCS three times since 2017, so New York is well aware of how dangerous the third baseman can be. Jazz Chisholm Jr. manned the hot corner for most of the Yankees’ games after the Trade Deadline, but he could shift to second base if New York signs Bregman or any other third baseman," wrote Feinsand. "Whether the Yankees are able to re-sign Soto could determine how aggressive they are with the rest of the free-agent market."

The Yankees' spending in free agency will be dictated by how the domino named 'Juan Soto' falls. Bregman would fill a clear need. He has been right in the middle of the Astros' success over the last eight seasons. He is a two-time All-Star, Gold Glover and Silver Slugger. He is the clear-cut best third baseman on the market.

Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. He hit 26 home runs in 2024 and won his first career Gold Glove. The Astros had made the American League Championship Series seven straight seasons before 2024, and Bregman was a big part of that. Losing him would be a big blow.

He has never worn another big league uniform, and an extension seemed like a no-brainer. However, Bregman is a free agent, and a team like the Yankees could swoop in and bring him to New York.
