It's becoming a real issue for Real Madrid that their full-back positions aren't working out. And the way things have gone so far this season hasn't helped.
Dani Carvajal's ACL injury left the right-back department exposed, and Lucas Vázquez's blow against Osasuna has left the team without any options in that position.
When it comes to the left-back position, it's not so much about the quantity of resources but the quality. It seems that Los Blancos are looking for an upgrade from Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, and Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies is seen as the target.
With uncertainty over both full-back positions and the defence in general, Real Madrid's homegrown star Miguel Gutiérrez emerged as a serious option following his success at Girona. However, the tables now appear to have turned.
The 23-year-old has become a regular starter for Michel's side, with 12 appearances to his name this season and one goal and two assists.
It seems like the player hasn't done enough to make a dream return to the Spanish capital, especially with so much competition for the position.
It's worth mentioning that Real Madrid can trigger their option to buy back Gutierrez by paying just €8 million. The price will go up to €9 million and €10 million over the next two seasons.
On top of that, Real Madrid can match any price tag that another club puts on the table to sign the young defender and make a deal. The player is keen to engineer a return, but the current situation makes it complicated.
