The Boston Celtics played the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. Boston lost 118-112 on its home court, just its second loss of the season and its first at home.
After the loss, emotions were clearly running high, as players were frustrated. Jayson Tatum played well, finishing with 32 points, four rebounds and two assists. The Celtics star shooting guard won't be remembered for how he played on the court, though. Tatum is going to be remembered for how he responded to a reporter's question about being benched for this year's men's Olympic team.
Jayson Tatum's NSFW response to critics
Tatum is typically hyper-aware of his surroundings. He is very mindful of how he presents himself and always looks to set a positive example for others. That's why it was surprising to hear how he answered the reporter's question about his Olympic benching.
"People want me to be louder, people want me to be meaner, whatever," Tatum said. "One thing about Jayson is, like, I'm always going to do what the f— I want to do and approach things how I want to approach them, what I feel is sincere to who I am as a person."
"I appreciate when it comes from a good place," he continued, "but like I said, I'm going to react, respond, approach things the way I want to."
Tatum accomplished a few things with this response. He answered the question, remained poised and stayed true to himself, and referred to himself in the third person, quite an impressive feat.
Lastly, and most importantly, he sent a message to all of his critics. Plenty of people want to see Tatum be more vocal and emotional as a leader. Tatum acknowledged that feedback, but re-iterated that he is going to stay true to himself while also using colorful language to show that he doesn't linger too much on those criticisms.
"Excuse my language, but you learn to not give a f—."
