As the Los Angeles Lakers grapple with fielding a competitive roster as LeBron James declines, they are expected to make a move ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. James is still a high-level player but will turn 40 years old this season and his long-term reliability is being called into question.
With James slowly declining and Anthony Davis’ prime nearing its end, trade rumors point to the Lakers targeting a third star. With three first-round draft picks to deal and D’Angelo Russell’s expiring salary acting as filler, a blockbuster deal is very plausible.
According to recent reports from one insider, the Lakers are willing and able to put together a massive trade package.
“When you think about LeBron James and Anthony Davis, how do we round out this team around both of those guys?” asked ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday. “They’re monitoring the sellers around the NBA…and my sources in the Lakers’ front office tell me they’re open to moving three first-round picks.”
The Lakers can outright trade first-round selections in 2029, 2030 or 2031 and can swap picks in 2026 and 2028. However, by then James will likely be retired and Davis will have begun his decline, and the Lakers aren’t willing to be a losing team in the latter half of this decade.
If they make a deal, the future will be in mind.
“They want a player or players that they feel can get into this iteration of this team with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but can also play for three, four or five years under JJ Redick as head coach,” Charania continued.
Redick has made a few questionable play calls and lineup choices in his first season leading the charge for the Lakers, but he seems to be a “player’s coach” that young guys enjoy suiting up for. There is no reason for the Lakers to shake things up and might even consult Redick on who would be a good fit.
With the next several years in mind with a trade, younger stars like Trae Young, Zach LaVine, Brandon Ingram and even Zion Williamson should stay on the radar.
