Matchday: Swansea City v Watford.

Match preview

Other than a couple of disappointing seasons in 2021-22 (when they finished 15th) and 2023-24 (when they finished 14th), Swansea have consistently been battling for a place in the playoffs since being relegated from the Premier League in 2017-18.

After a pretty rough start to 2023-24, Swansea managed to recover pretty well, climbing back into the middle of the table. A lot of that was down to Luke Williams, who joined the club in January 2024.

With 2024-25 offering a fresh start for the Swans, they would have been aiming to close the gap on the playoff places once again, but they've had another underwhelming start to the campaign.

Swansea had a decent start, winning three and drawing one of their first six league games. However, they then went on a six-game losing streak, which saw them drop down the table.

The Swans didn't score in five of those games, but they finally found the back of the net in their last game, beating newly-promoted Oxford United 2-1 with goals from Zan Vipotnik and Florian Bianchini.

Williams will be looking to secure back-to-back league wins when they take on Watford on Tuesday, although the visitors are likely to prove a challenging test for the hosts.

Watford have had a good start to the season. They're aiming to get back into the play-off places for the first time since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2021-22.

The Hornets are currently fifth in the Championship standings, having taken 22 points from their opening 13 games, with seven wins, one draw and five losses.

They had their biggest league win of the season when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-2 in their last game. That'll give them confidence for Tuesday's game, and they'll be aiming to do it again.

Watford have only beaten Swansea once in their last three visits to the Swansea.com Stadium, but they've also got two wins and a draw in the last five meetings at home or away.

In other news, the team that beat Oxford United last time out could be back in action here. Bianchini might even start after scoring in that game.

Watford are likely to be without Angelo Ogbonna, Jeremy Ngakia and Tom Dele-Bashiru due to ongoing injury concerns, while Ryan Porteous is suspended for accumulating five yellow cards across the first 13 fixtures.

Tom Cleverley could decide to name a similar starting team for this one, having recorded a superb 6-2 win against Sheffield Wednesday in their last match.
