The 2014/15 PSL title-winning defender believes the current Amakhosi leader has not met all the requirements that are vital for a leader.

Yusuf Maart was confirmed as Kaizer Chiefs' captain ahead of the 2024/25 season, succeeding Itumeleng Khune who had been demoted owing to a disciplinary breach.

The custodian has since been forced to retire from the Glamour Boys' playing unit owing to his advancing age.

A section of Amakhosi fans are not satisfied with the 29-year-old's displays at the club, after joining from Sekhukhune United.

Recently, Maart stated he is not concerned with what the critics are saying, insisting he is focused on helping the Soweto giants perform well.

Former club's defender Morgan Gould has now stated there are some other things coach Nasreddine Nabi before confirming him as his permanent captain. However, he has opined Maart does not tick all the boxes.

"People will always have their opinions. For me, he’s a better leader right now, but I won’t say the best leader, and he’s been in the team for some time," the 41-year-old told FarPost.

"I am sure there is something the coach saw; that’s why he’s the captain. Gone are the days when captains were only hard workers and winners of the game. Maybe he’s leading in another way. When it comes to the captaincy, it goes down to three elements. The players, the technical team, and the supporters.

"Maart is the best when it comes to his work ethic. He pushes, he fights, although sometimes there is a feeling that he’s not the right one," Gould concluded.

Maart should consistently deliver for Amakhosi to help them stand a chance of ending their nine-season trophy drought.

If Chiefs perform well, Maart, like all the other players, will have better chances to play for Bafana Bafana in competitive assignments.
