Perhaps there was a misunderstanding about the captaincy appointment starting in 2023. At the time, Deschamps bypassed Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, who had more experience in the team and was well-liked by players and fans, and gave the captaincy to Mbappe.

But at this year's European Cup, neither Mbappe nor Griezmann gave a performance that was up to scratch. The French team was lacking in creativity and offensive power without them.
