Aston Villa's first-ever home game in the UEFA Champions League brings a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern München.

The English side returned to Europe's top club competition with a 3-0 victory at Young Boys while Bayern became the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League game, and Harry Kane the 18th player to score four in a match – including three penalties, a competition first – in a 9-2 home win against GNK Dinamo.

Aston Villa

Record vs German clubs: W2 D0 L2 F4 A5

Home record vs German clubs: W0 D0 L1

Villa have not played a Bundesliga team since losing 1-3 at Hamburg in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage.

Their only home game against German opponents came in the second round of their victorious 1981/82 European Cup campaign, a 0-1 second-leg defeat against BFC Dynamo; they progressed on away goals thanks to a 2-1 first-leg victory in Berlin.

This is Villa's first Champions League campaign – they are the 11th English club to feature in the competition proper.

Villa are taking part in the European Cup for the third time overall, and a first since 1982/83, when as holders they lost 5-2 on aggregate to eventual runners-up Juventus in the quarter-finals (1-2 h, 1-3 a).

The Villans were involved in European competition for the first time since 2010/11 in 2023/24, Unai Emery's team reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals where they lost to eventual champions Olympiacos (2-4 h, 0-2 a).

The Birmingham club won their first six home European games last season before the first-leg defeat by Olympiacos.

Emery guided Villa to fourth place in the Premier League in 2023/24 – their highest finish since 1995/96, when they were also fourth.

Villa are one of five clubs making their Champions League debuts in 2024/25, along with Brest, Bologna, Girona and Slovan Bratislava.

Bayern

Record vs English clubs: W28 D19 L16 F114 A80

Away record vs English clubs: W9 D10 L9

Bayern won three of their four games against English clubs in 2023/24, beating Manchester United 4-3 at home and 1-0 away in the group stage and Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals (2-2 a, 1-0 h).

The German side have suffered three defeats in their last ten away games against English clubs (W4 D3).

Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds in each one of those campaigns.

This is Bayern's 28th campaign in the Champions League proper, level with Porto and fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 29).

Bayern are unbeaten in a record 41 Champions League group/league phase matches (W37 D4).

After winning five of their six games in the 2023/24 group stage, Bayern edged past Lazio (3-1 aggregate) and Arsenal but conceded two late goals in the semi-final second leg to lose to Real Madrid (2-2 h, 1-2 a).

The six-time European champions have reached the quarter-finals or better in 12 of their last 13 Champions League campaigns, the exception a last-16 elimination by Liverpool in 2018/19.

Defeat in Madrid last season was only Bayern's fourth in 35 away Champions League matches (W24 D7).

A side coached by Thomas Tuchel relinquished their hold on the Bundesliga title in 2023/24, finishing third behind Bayer Leverkusen – who were 18 points ahead of Bayern – and Stuttgart. It was the first time Bayern had failed to win the title since 2011/12 and their lowest league placing since 2010/11, when they were also third.

Tuchel was replaced by Vincent Kompany in the summer.
