After an abysmal start last season, where Lyon garnered only three points from their first nine games—the worst opening in their history—they hoped for a better beginning to the 2024-25 season. Despite a remarkable turnaround under Pierre Sage, who led them from last place to a sixth-place finish and managed to secure 37 points from the final 45, Lyon are off to a poor start this term. They have lost both their opening matches, including a 3-0 defeat to Rennes and a 2-0 loss to AS Monaco. With significant summer spending exceeding £100 million, expectations were high, but Lyon finds themselves in 17th place, still without a point.
Strasbourg, on the other hand, have enjoyed an unbeaten start with a draw and a win. New manager Liam Rosenior, who replaced Patrick Vieira, has seen his team draw 1-1 with Montpellier and secure a 3-1 victory over Rennes. This strong start is a positive shift after a disappointing end to the last season and pre-season. Rosenior aims to build on this momentum and improve Strasbourg's standings after two challenging years battling relegation.
