Liverpool's James McConnell has returned to training with the first team, joining Harvey Elliott and the Liverpool U21 squad. McConnell was injured during Arne Slot's first season as Liverpool manager. He has now returned to training and could play for Liverpool again later this season.
McConnell impressed last season and was expected to continue his development with a loan spell at a Championship club. Hull, Blackburn, Derby, Huddersfield and Birmingham wanted to take the young midfielder on loan. However, he was injured and couldn't play.
As Liverpool’s season kicked off, his slow recovery process kept him out of the squad, extending his absence through the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
On Monday, McConnell made a big move in his comeback by taking part in an outdoor session at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre, where he joined a bunch of young talents, including Harvey Elliott, who is also recovering from a fractured foot.
Elliott, a high-profile figure within Liverpool’s ranks, has been a consistent performer and fan favourite, known for his resilience and playmaking ability. His return to training is a boost for Liverpool’s U21s, adding quality and experience to the group. Alongside Elliott and McConnell, other academy talents, such as Kieran Morrison, Tom Hill, Dominic Corness, Amara Nallo, and Isaac Mabaya, were also involved in the session
McConnell is likely to spend the next few weeks building up his match fitness and gradually working his way back into competitive action. Although he played at a senior level last season, he'll probably start off competing at the youth level again. He'll work on getting back into the swing of things and adjusting to Arne Slot's tactics.
Liverpool's midfield is as competitive as ever, so McConnell will have to be at his best to grab a spot on the first team. If he can get back to his old form, he could be a great addition to Liverpool's midfield in the second half of the season. He's got great ball-handling skills, vision, and tactical intelligence, so he's definitely one to watch in the Liverpool system.
