Feyenoord vs AZ
Match preview
Feyenoord's recent revival hit a bump in the road last time out when they suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax in Wednesday's heavyweight clash.
A slow start was punished by goals from Kenneth Taylor and Jorrel Hato inside the first 25 minutes, and Brian Priske's men never really got back into the game.
It was the end of a five-match winning streak for De Stadionclub, who were beginning to return to last season's form after a slow start to the season that saw them win just one of their first four league games.
Feyenoord's defeat to Ajax was their first league defeat since a goalless stalemate against Volendam in April, and they will be desperate to get back on the scoresheet.
Finishing seven points behind PSV Eindhoven last season, Saturday's hosts were the holders' biggest challengers for Eredivisie glory, but a title challenge this term looks unlikely as the Rotterdam side currently trail the defending champions by a whopping 11 points.
Fresh from their first home league defeat of 2024, Feyenoord will be keen to get back to winning ways in front of their fans, who have been largely underwhelming in recent matches.
AZ Alkmaar squandered a golden opportunity to end a disastrous five-match losing streak and take all three points in their 2-2 draw with Go Ahead Eagles in Sunday's enthralling clash at the AFAS Stadium.
Goals in each half from Troy Parrott and Denso Kasius put Maarten Martens' men in control before Victor Edvardsen restored parity five minutes from time after Gerrit Nauber had halved the deficit.
The final whistle last time out was greeted with much disappointment by the AZ faithful, who had not seen their side win a football match since a 3-2 triumph over Elfsborg just over a month ago.
After a blistering start to the season, AZ's recent struggles have left them sixth in the Eredivisie table, although victory this weekend would see them leapfrog their opponents.
Sitting in 24th place out of 36 teams in the Europa League, the Cheeseheads are in need of a boost both domestically and on the continent, so a big performance is needed on Saturday ahead of their next European clash against Fenerbahce on Thursday.
