Latest Team news
Chelsea is looking to get back on the winning track in the Premier League after a big win against Panathinaikos in the UEFA Conference League. The team will be hosting Newcastle at Stanford Bridge, so it'll be interesting to see how they fare.
Chelsea is coming off a narrow loss to Liverpool, which knocked them out of the top four. Enzo Maresca and his team will be keen to avoid losing any more ground in what's already a tight race for the Champions League spots in England. If they lose, they could miss out on European places. But if they win, they could get back to where they were before the defeat at Anfield.
Chelsea had a completely different lineup midweek than the one that played against Liverpool. As has become typical since Maresca took the reins, the Blues got the job done in Athens.
Club captain Reece James was back in action last week, which means Maresca has all of his registered first-team players at his disposal for Sunday. It's pretty unusual for a club that's had to deal with a lot of injuries recently to have such a strong lineup.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe on Chelsea challenge:
"They have real strength in depth. They are beginning to stabilise now in the sense of you can see consistency in their team selection. Credit to them for bringing in a really good manager that has brought in that tactical structure. He is very clever with what he does. We know the next two games are going to be very challenging."
As for Newcastle, they may lose Callum for the next 3 games. He has had some tightness in his body - he hasn’t felt like he can kick on to that last part of his recovery.
But there is also good news for Newcastle, who have reached an agreement with their No. 10, Anthony Gordon, to renew a long-term contract. The England international has signed a multi-year contract on the basis of his original contract expiring in June 2026, and he will continue to stay at St. James' Park.
