Augsburg demonstrated their home advantage on Saturday. FCA beat Dortmund, who were a bit off in attack, with a score of 2-1 for the second time.
After the 1-3 loss to Freiburg, Augsburg coach Jesse Troup made two changes to the lineup: Schlottbeck and Claude Maurice (in the starting lineup) replaced Bauer and Essen Deutsch (both on the bench).
Given the 2-5 loss to Real Madrid, Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin was bound to make one change: Anton came in for the injured Suler, who's out with a ligament injury.
From that point on, the game proceeded smoothly, with Dortmund having a lot of possession and Augsburg applying pressure from the outset. The score was tied up in the fourth minute when Girasi sent a clever through ball from the top of the arc and Malen helped Dortmund take the lead by one goal.
After the goal, both teams sized each other up for a while. Neither team had many chances for a while, but then Claude Maurice made his move. In the 25th minute, the midfielder suddenly shot from 25 meters into the bottom left corner on the counterattack to equalize the score.
Apart from the two goals, there weren't many chances in the first half. Dortmund didn't make the most of all those possessions, and the tenacious FCA didn't have many chances to turn the tide. Just after Rabrovic blocked Sabitzer's long-range shot (39th minute), the game finally went to halftime with the score at 1-1.
Dortmund came out of the locker room with Can and Groh, replacing the injured Anton and Sabitzer. When the black and yellow captain weakly blocked Claude Maurice's cross, the ball bounced back to Maurice, who confidently shot it into the right corner to make the score 2-1 (50th minute). At that point, FCA was the better team, while Dortmund was in a tough spot and didn't have many good offensive ideas.
In the 70th minute, Gittens' close-range shot was blocked by Rabrovic, and the visiting team began to take the initiative on the field again. Dortmund now needs to do more to reverse the game, but Augsburg did not give them too many opportunities. Instead, Kabal, who made his Bundesliga debut for Dortmund, was shown a second yellow card and sent off (90th minute +9), and Dortmund had no power to fight back. The score was 2:1 in the end. Augsburg won 3 points at home, and Dortmund could only swallow the third defeat of the season.
Next, in the German Cup, FCA will play Schalke 04 at 6 pm on Tuesday. At 8:45 pm on the same day, Dortmund will play away against Wolfsburg.
