Lyon vs Auxerre

Match preview

Lyon head coach Pierre Sage on September 29, 2024

Lyon lost to Besiktas on Thursday night, which was their first European defeat this season after two wins. However, they're still in a good position in the League Phase, currently 10th in the standings.

Les Gones are back in the domestic league, where they're bouncing back from a slow start to the season. They've won three games in a row before this match, which is the longest winning streak in the French top flight.

The most recent win was last weekend against Le Havre (4-0). It was the fourth match in a row where the team scored two or more goals, and they've only conceded once in their last three.

At home, Pierre Sage's side have had a mixed run of form this term, winning two and losing two of their four games. Interestingly, they are the only team in Ligue 1 to have scored and conceded 20+ goals in 2024 (20 scored; 21 conceded).

The hosts are the clear favourites in this one and have been unbeaten in their last 20 matches at the Groupama Stadium against newly promoted opponents, going back to December 2015.

Meanwhile, the last time Auxerre faced Lyon in the top flight in February 2023, they managed to pull off an unlikely 2-1 victory at home. However, it was only one of eight wins they managed that term, which wasn't enough to avoid relegation.

After getting promoted straight back to Ligue 1, Les Diplomates will be hoping to stay up, but they've had a bit of a mixed start to the season, winning three and losing five of their first eight games.

However, they'll still be pretty happy with their return, especially given that the club hasn't won three of their first eight league games in the top flight since the 2009-10 season. They went on to finish third that year.

Last weekend, Christophe Pelissier's team held on against a late push by Reims to secure a 2-1 win, marking their second consecutive home victory after a surprising 3-0 win over Brest at the end of last month.

However, the team has lost all four of its league matches this season when playing away from home. In each of these matches, the opposition scored two or more goals. The last time the team won a top-flight away game was in April 2023.

Team News

Lyon's Rayan Cherki celebrates scoring on September 26, 2024

There were rumours that Clinton Mata might be a doubt for the Lyon Europa League match against Besiktas due to a minor injury, but he played the full 90 minutes in midweek and should be in the starting lineup for this one.

Nemanja Matić, who hasn't played since Lyon's match against Rangers last month, came back into the squad in midweek but didn't get to play. He should be in the selection equation this weekend.

It looks like Auxerre will be without three players for the trip to Décines-Charpieu, including Lasso Coulibaly and Nathan Buayi-Kiala, who haven't featured this season due to knee injuries.

Paul Joly is also out with a knee injury, but it's not as bad as the others. Reports say he could be back in action by the start of December.
