FIFA announced on the 7th that Italian national team defender Marco Courto, who was loaned from Como to Cesena, was suspended for 10 games.
The incident originated from a pre-season match between Wolves and the Como Football Association in July this year. During the game, Wolves' Korean national team striker Hwang Hee-chan was allegedly subjected to discriminatory remarks by Marco Courto, who was playing for Como at the time. Halfway through the second half, Wolves' teammates reacted violently, causing Portuguese striker Daniel Podence to assault the opposing player and be sent off.
After the match, Como released the following official statement, which began: "The club does not tolerate racism and condemns all forms of racism in the strongest terms."
"We have consulted with the defender in question and have learned the context of the incident. He told us that he advised his fellow defenders to ignore the comments directed at Hwang Hee-chan and that the defender in question did not know that the comments were inappropriate. The player said: You ignore him (referring to Hwang Hee-chan), he thought he was Jackie Chan. After a comprehensive discussion with the player, we have determined that the comments in question were referring to the player's name and his teammates who often call him "Jackie Chan" on the pitch. To the best of the club's knowledge, the player did not make any insulting remarks. Unfortunately, the response of some Wolves players has sensationalized this incident.
After Wolves lodged formal complaints with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), and the Korean Football Association (KFA) After submitting similar proposals to FIFA, it was finally decided to take disciplinary action against Kurt. A FIFA spokesperson said that Marco Kurt was held responsible for discriminatory behavior and was banned for ten games. Of the ten games, half of the ban is two years. In addition, the player was required to perform community service and receive training and education at an institution approved by FIFA. This statement confirmed the above-mentioned ban.
In response, Wolves issued an official statement on the 7th local time. They said: "We welcome FIFA's ban on him after a racist incident in the pre-season match against Como in July." Then they further elaborated on the club's position:
"The ban on our players sends a clear message that racism and any discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated in football or society. This decision emphasizes FIFA's commitment to ensuring that serious behavior will be punished, and we strongly hope that sports sanctions will be accompanied by community service and education. These measures emphasize the importance of punishment and education in eliminating discriminatory behavior in the sport we all love."
"We would also like to thank the English Football Association for its continued support throughout the process. Collaboration between football’s governing bodies is vital to ensure incidents like this are dealt with effectively and that all players, staff and supporters are protected from discrimination. Wolves firmly oppose discrimination of any kind and are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels respected and accepted.”
