On Monday, NBA insider Shams Charania revealed his intention to join ESPN.
Charania publicly declared his transition to the network several weeks after his former mentor, colleague, and long-standing NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski relinquished his role at ESPN to assume the position of general manager for the basketball program at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure.
In a social media post, Charania expressed his honor at joining ESPN as the company's senior NBA insider. "I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to collaborate with an exceptional group of colleagues at ESPN and to contribute to the global sports audience."
Charania is departing The Athletic to assume a position at ESPN. Wojnarowski and Charania had previously been employed at Yahoo Sports in a collaborative capacity, with Wojnarowski acting in a mentorship role.
As competitors, Charania and Wojnarowski were the two most prominent sources of NBA-related breaking news, and each amassed a considerable social media following of fans seeking to remain informed about the latest developments. In consequence of Wojnarowski's retirement from the industry, Charania has assumed the role of the preeminent source of basketball-related breaking news at ESPN.
Additionally, ESPN's MLB insider Jeff Passan was purportedly a contender for the role previously held by Wojnarowski. He offered a response on social media to Charania's announcement on Monday that "baseball is superior in all respects."
Wojnarowski publicly declared his intention to depart from ESPN and return to his alma mater on September 18. Wojnarowski received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1991, after which he commenced his professional career in journalism.
"This profession has had a profound impact on my life, but I have decided to step down from my role at ESPN and from the news industry as a whole," Wojnarowski stated on social media. "I recognize the dedication demanded by my position, and I have determined that I am no longer inclined to make that investment. Time is a finite resource, and I wish to allocate mine in a manner that is more personally meaningful."
At the time of his departure, The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported that Wojnarowski was leaving behind a contract with ESPN valued at approximately $20 million. The terms of Charania's contract with ESPN were not initially disclosed.
