Ligue 1 | Gameweek 6

Sep 28, 2024 at 8pm UK

Stade Louis II.

Monaco vs Montpellier

Match preview

Monaco might be feeling the effects of their Champions League win against Barcelona. In their match against Le Havre, Monaco took the lead in just nine minutes thanks to Jordan Teze, but then Daler Kuzyaev equalised for Le Havre in the hour mark.

Le Havre thought they'd taken the lead at the Stade Louis II, but the offside flag denied them by a couple of inches. Monaco made the most of that reprieve, with Eliesse Ben Seghir and Folarin Balogun rubber-stamping a hard-fought triumph.

Even though former attacking star Wissam Ben Yedder ended his time with the team over the summer, Saturday's hosts are doing well with Hutter in charge. They're tied with both Marseille and PSG at 13 points, which is their best after five games since they won the title in 2016-17.

Monaco are currently placed third, but with Marseille not playing until Sunday, they'll rise to second with one point or three. PSG play Rennes on Friday evening.

Next up for Monaco in the European scene is a trip to Croatia to take on Dynamo Kyiv on October 2. Before that, the team will be looking to make it eight wins from their last nine Ligue 1 matches, which would really boost hopes of a sustained title push.

Monaco have already had plenty of winning moments this season, but Montpellier had to wait until matchweek five to get their first win of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season. They came out on top in a five-goal thriller with Auxerre.

There were two instances where the old and the new combined at the Stade de la Mosson. Teji Savanier, who has been with the team for a long time, set up two goals for Akor Adams, who has been watched by Chelsea. Adams scored two goals, and Modibo Sagnan scored one.

It was a welcome change for Montpellier to emerge victorious in a high-scoring match, as they had suffered three disappointing losses to PSG (6-0), Nantes (3-1) and Rennes (3-0) before last weekend's success, which lifted them into 15th place.

Michel Der Zakarian's team are still in danger of being demoted, despite being two points better off than basement team Angers. They have conceded 15 goals, which is the most in the French top flight this season, with an average of three per game.

On top of that, Montpellier has lost five of its last six away games, including two 2-0 losses to Monaco last season. But the team made a splash in the 2022-23 season with a 4-0 win at Monaco.
