Center Joel Embiid is the Philadelphia 76ers’ franchise cornerstone, meaning there’s no intention of the two parties breaking up.
Although Embiid is under contract at least through the 2026 season, a record-breaking extension is on the way. ESPN analyst Bobby Marks is predicting the Sixers superstar to sign a maximum contract extension in the near future.
"He's eligible for three [years] $190 [million], or he could opt in and sign for two [years] $132 [million]," Marks shared. "By doing that, he would actually earn an extra two million dollars. I would be stunned if, by the start of training camp or even by the start of the season, I would expect a deal to get done with Embiid in the near future here, and I think it will certainly be at max money."
Either of these possible extensions would surpass the yearly value of Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who signed earlier in the summer for five years, $314 million. Embiid's contract would come in at an average of $63.3/$66 compared to Tatum's $62.8 million.
The Sixers locked up co-stars Tyrese Maxey and Paul George this offseason. Maxey signed an extension worth $204 million over four years while George agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract. Securing their established Big Three further lengthens the championship window despite George being past his prime at 34 years old.
76ers training camp begins on Oct. 1, meaning this extension could be finalized as soon as the next two weeks.
