A revolutionary idea is currently being explored in the RFEF’s refereeing committee sessions: turning over the responsibility of refereeing decisions to Artificial Intelligence.
The proposal, which is still under consideration, involves collaboration between the Technical Committee of Referees, LaLiga, the RFEF, and the clubs. Early reactions to the initiative have been positive, and if implemented, it could dramatically reshape the way refereeing operates in Spanish football.
LaLiga has already presented a comprehensive report outlining the plan, which would see AI take charge of both referee assignments and decisions on promotions and demotions. Rather than relying on a traditional draw, the AI would analyse a wide range of variables and statistics to suggest two or three ideal referees for each match.
LaLiga set to discuss AI implementation
One point discussed in a previous meeting was the potential removal of the long-standing territoriality rule, which prevents referees from officiating matches involving teams from their own Autonomous Community. It’s still unclear whether AI would be bound by this rule or whether the system could be programmed to account for it.
Over the coming weeks, LaLiga is set to meet with members of the Refereeing Committee (CTA) and various technical experts to assess whether the AI tool can incorporate specific criteria and statistical models.
The idea of using AI to evaluate referees’ performances over the season has also received a warm welcome. Under this proposal, the system would automatically determine which referees should be promoted or relegated, although it’s still uncertain whether the CTA would retain any override powers.
This push for change comes in response to growing concerns about the transparency and consistency of refereeing decisions. While the proposal is still in its early stages, it has not met resistance from major clubs — including Real Madrid — who were present at the latest meeting and did not voice any opposition.
