Bruno Fernandes says that Ruben Amorim is an excellent coach. The former Sporting Lisbon pair are set to start working together at Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag's time at United came to an end after two and a half years. During that time, the team's performance in the Premier League was at its worst. The Dutchman was let go after a 2-1 loss to West Ham United. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy took over on an interim basis and managed to turn things around, with the team recording three wins and one draw in the transition period before Amorim took over.
Bruno and Ruben never worked together at Sporting Lisbon, as the midfielder left the Lisbon club for Manchester United before the head coach took over. However, the midfielder kept a close eye on Amorim's achievements and thinks that his ability to connect with his players makes him a coach who can inspire success.
Fernandes said: "For me what stands out for me is the connection he has with players. When the manager is going from your club in the middle of the season with all the things they have still to win, you see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they make him feel part of the team and the way they treat him, it shows he's a great character and he is someone that gives his all to the players."
Fernandes added that Amorim’s influence is particularly evident in how he shields players from criticism and supports them through challenges, a trait Fernandes hopes Amorim will bring to Old Trafford.
"I have seen many moments where players were struggling and he goes to the press conference to defend his players to give them the best opportunity to shine," he said. "He had a really young team so he needed to do that, hopefully, he can do the same with us."
Given United's recent struggles, Amorim's focus on motivating his players could be just what the team needs to reshape its mentality. His first competitive match as manager will be on 24 November, when the team will be playing Ipswich Town away at Portman Road in a Premier League away game.
