Nigerian forward Mohammed Zulkifilu has declared his determination to secure qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing it as a personal mission, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Kano Pillars striker, part of Nigeria’s 30-man squad for the CHAN qualifiers against Ghana, views this as a chance for redemption following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the last two tournaments.
Speaking to Brila FM, Zulkifilu expressed how much it would mean for the team to return to the competition, especially after their narrow miss last time out.
“We came close to qualifying for the CHAN last time, and that failure still lingers in my mind,” he admitted.
“This time around, it is like a personal mission for me and those of us who still made this team. We can’t afford to fail again; qualifying for the CHAN is non-negotiable.”
Reflecting on his inclusion in the squad, Zulkifilu voiced his excitement.
“I am truly delighted to make the squad again, and this time things will be different,” he said.
Zulkifilu is confident that Nigeria will be able to overcome Ghana, who defeated the Super Eagles B at this stage in the qualifying round for the last edition.
Nigeria’s path to the 2024 CHAN has been slightly eased by a bye in the preliminary qualifiers, thanks to their FIFA ranking.
The final round of qualifiers will be contested over two legs, with Ghana hosting the first leg from December 20–22, and Nigeria hosting the return leg between December 27–29.
Nigeria’s 30-man roster for this critical fixture includes several new faces, among them Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole, Suur Kumaga of Lobi Stars, winger Bernard Ovoke, and U-23 talent Dominion Ohaka.
Kano Pillars trio Abiam Nelson, Aminu Adams, and Sudais Alibaba have also received call-ups, joining a squad that blends seasoned experience with promising young players.
Preparations are already underway, with the team assembling for a training camp under assistant coaches Fidelis Ikechukwu and Daniel Amokachi.
