Liverpool are on a roll under new manager Arne Slot, breaking records left and right. The scene of their latest win was particularly poignant.Liverpool scraped a 1-0 win in the Champions League on Wednesday at RB Leipzig. It's pretty surprising that Slot has made such an impact so quickly, especially given Klopp's track record at the club.
After all, Liverpool has now won the opening six away games of a season for the first time in the club's 132-year history. Slot is the first manager to win as many as 11 of his first 12 games in charge across all competitions in English top-flight history.
The Dutchman has already got Liverpool top of the Premier League after just eight games. Now, a third straight win in the Champions League has left Liverpool as one of only two teams – along with Aston Villa – on a maximum nine points so far.
Darwin Núñez scored the only goal of the game, keeping Liverpool's Champions League record intact. The Uruguayan striker got the better of Leipzig, who tried everything they could but still ended up with nothing.
The first half was a real back-and-forth between Leipzig and Liverpool, with both teams looking to score. The German team came close to taking the lead in the 19th minute after a mistake by Kelleher, the British goalkeeper, but Sesko's subsequent shot went just wide of the post.
Leipzig seemed to be holding their own against Liverpool at that point. They actually scored first in the 26th minute, but the referee disallowed it because the player was offside. The Reds weren't put off and celebrated a 0-1 lead in the next play. A cross from the left wing was finished off by Salah, who pushed it into the net almost on the goal line.
Liverpool's Uruguayan striker could have gone into the break with a goal to his name, but Gulácsi made a great save after half an hour of play after a great header. After the 0-1, the English side showed they were the better team and came close to scoring again. Leipzig's goalkeeper was on hand to prevent the goal once more, this time denying Van Dijk.
There was a bit of controversy in the 38th minute when Darwin Núñez was brought down in the area by Orbán, but the referee didn't think it was a penalty. If he'd blown his whistle, it wouldn't have made a difference either. Gakpo also had a chance to score before the break, in the 44th minute, but his shot went wide of the net.
After the break, the game continued in a similar vein to the first half. Both Leipzig and Liverpool were looking to score against the other team. The Germans were looking to level the playing field, but the first real opportunity of the second half came from Mac Allister for the English. The midfielder took a good shot, but the ball hit the crossbar.
