Borussia M'bach vs Heidenheim

Match preview

After spending the majority of last season fighting off relegation, early indications this term suggest that Borussia Mönchengladbach will be right in the thick of the relegation battle again this term.

The Fohlen suffered their fourth defeat of the campaign with a 2-1 away loss to Augsburg before the international break, while their two wins have come against Union Berlin and basement club Bochum.

The last time M'gladbach suffered four defeats in their opening six league games was back in 2015-16, and since then they've only recorded fewer points at this stage of the season once, last season, when they had five points.

One of the Foals' biggest problems this term has been their poor form in front of goal, with only seven goals found so far, the third-worst tally of any team in the division.

In five previous meetings with Heidenheim, however, Gerardo Seoane's side have never been beaten. They beat them twice at the same venue last season, winning 2-1 in the league and 3-1 in the DFB-Pokal in October, before drawing 1-1 away in March.

Meanwhile, Heidenheim's inaugural campaign in the top flight was a resounding success, as they finished the season with 42 points, which earned them a place in this season's Conference League.

However, after starting the season with back-to-back league wins over St. Pauli and Augsburg, the Schanzers have now lost three of their last four, including a 1-0 home defeat to RB Leipzig just before the international break.

This is a remarkable turnaround for Heidenheim, who had previously lost three of their previous 14 Bundesliga matches, with only Bochum and Hoffenheim losing as many games in the same period.

The visitors have also failed to score in two of their last three league games and have created the third-fewest clear-cut chances in the division with 10, behind only St. Pauli (9) and Union Berlin (8).

However, Frank Schmidt's side have won three of their last five away league games (W3 D1 L1), which is more than they won in their first 15 top-flight matches last season.
