Leverkusen were in top form during the match, and by the 30th minute they had already established a 2-0 lead. Boniface played a crucial role in his team’s early dominance, assisting Martin Terrier’s opening goal before finding the back of the net himself to inspire his team to a 4-1 victory.
After scoring the first goal, Boniface surprised fans and viewers by pulling his shorts down in celebration, a moment that quickly went viral. Following the game, Boniface explained the thinking behind his unexpected celebration, attributing it to a popular social media trend in his home country of Nigeria.
After the match, Boniface clarified that the gesture was not meant to offend or provoke anyone. “I didn’t want to provoke anyone,” he said. “I did it in front of our fans. It’s a TikTok trend by a big influencer in Nigeria. I promised him that I would cheer so much, I just hadn’t scored yet.”
With this victory, Leverkusen returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga campaign, as they aim to defend their league title. They will next turn their attention to their UEFA Champions League fixture against Feyenoord on Thursday.
