Liverpool have sold the defender Sepp van den Berg to Brentford and midfielder Bobby Clark to RB Salzburg to take their summer sales total past £60m. Van den Berg made four senior appearances in five years for Liverpool, spending most of his Anfield career out on loan, most recently at Mainz. He has joined Brentford on a five-year deal worth £20m plus £5m in add-ons.

Liverpool paid PEC Zwolle £1.3m for the central defender and will also receive 17.5% of any sell-on fee. The 22-year-old is Brentford’s second signing from Liverpool this summer after Fabio Carvalho’s move in a deal worth up to £27.5m.

“I’m very pleased that we have managed to sign Sepp,” Thomas Frank told Brentford’s website. “I think this is a great signing for the club and the team. Sepp is a centre-back with a good level and he has the potential to develop even further.

“He fits our culture and the way we want to play: he is quick, he reads the game well and is composed on the ball in the buildup and in the decisive defending actions.”

Liverpool sold Clark, one of the young stars of last season’s Carabao Cup final victory, to RB Salzburg on Thursday in a £10m deal. The 19-year-old midfielder made 12 appearances last season and was highly regarded by the Jürgen Klopp and his assistant, Pepijn Lijnders.

Lijnders is now head coach at Salzburg and with first team opportunities appearing limited for Clark under Arne Slot this season pushed for a reunion with the England under-20 international and son of the former Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark.
