Portugal secured their place in the UEFA Nations League final after Cristiano Ronaldo’s 137th international goal helped them to a 2–1 comeback victory over Germany, ending the Selecção's run of five consecutive defeats in matches against the Germans.
With kick-off delayed by 10 minutes due to a storm in Munich, both sides appeared eager to assert their dominance early on.
Leon Goretzka directed a low shot straight at Diogo Costa following a clever cut-back from Joshua Kimmich, while at the other end, Ronaldo saw a powerful shot easily saved by Marc-André ter Stegen.
As the first half progressed, the hosts continued to pose a threat, but Costa stood firm in the Portugal goal, denying both Nick Woltemade and Leon Goretzka with two superb saves in quick succession.
Having gone three consecutive away games without a win (two draws, one loss), Roberto Martínez’s side lacked confidence and struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the final third, and the teams were level at half-time.
Die Mannschaft upped the ante at the start of the second half, and their pressure paid off when they scored in the 48th minute. Kimmich’s lofted pass into the box found Wirtz, who was seemingly destined to play for Liverpool, and the playmaker kept his cool to direct a clinical header into the bottom corner.
Undeterred, Portugal quickly regrouped and found an equaliser shortly after the hour mark. Substitute Francisco Conceição skipped away from Robin Gosens before advancing to the edge of the box and curling a stunning strike into the top corner.
This goal shifted the momentum inside the Allianz Arena completely, and the Selecção completed their turnaround just five minutes later when Nuno Mendes broke through the German backline and set up Ronaldo for a simple close-range finish.
Stunned by the visitors' quickfire double, Germany went in pursuit of a response with time ticking into the final quarter-hour. However, Karim Adeyemi could only hit the outside of the post from range, and the Portuguese defence held firm to inflict just a second defeat in 13 matches on Julian Nagelsmann’s side on German soil.
