Schalke has appointed Miron Muslic, the manager of Plymouth Argyle, as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

Plymouth Argyle announced on Wednesday that the 42-year-old, born in Bosnia and holding Austrian nationality, will not return to the club after the summer break.

Muslic replaced Wayne Rooney, the former England captain, as Argyle's manager in mid-January, when Plymouth was at the bottom of the Championship.

Despite leading the team to a memorable FA Cup victory against Premier League champions Liverpool, Muslic could not prevent the club from being relegated from the second tier.

Muslic now joins Schalke, who finished 14th in the German second division this season. The club, once a regular in the Champions League and Europa League during the early 2000s, will spend its fourth season in the last five outside the Bundesliga.
