After a challenging period, Inter Miami secured a vital draw on Saturday night at Subaru Park against the Philadelphia Union in the 2025 Major League Soccer season. One of the standout moments in the 3-3 tie was a brilliant free kick by Lionel Messi, the team's captain, who demonstrated his resolve to guide the squad out of its recent struggles.

Although Messi had previously scored in Inter Miami's 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls and in their 4-1 loss to Minnesota United, this goal carried extra significance. With his team trailing 3-1, Messi stepped up for a free kick and, true to form, sparked Javier Mascherano's side back into contention. Shortly after, Telasco Segovia leveled the score to earn the draw.

Following a clear foul just outside the box, Messi, donning the No. 10 jersey, confidently took the set piece. As tension built, Philadelphia's Kai Wagner attempted to anticipate a chip over the wall. However, he was unprepared for Messi's low and powerful shot toward the near post, which caught 19-year-old goalkeeper Andrew Rick by surprise. Despite Rick's dive, Messi fired it in for a 3-2 score, igniting celebrations among the away supporters.

Messi in MLS 2025

It has been an eventful season for the World Cup winner so far. Saturday's goal was his first successful free kick in the 2025 MLS campaign after 10 attempts. Notably, he has also attempted seven free kicks in the Concacaf Champions Cup without scoring.

Another key statistic: this was his first goal from outside the box this season. His other five goals have come from inside the penalty area, and he has yet to convert a penalty in 2025.

Across 11 appearances, with 10 starts, Messi has recorded six goals and two assists in league play. With much of the season remaining, the captain will continue to leverage his expertly honed skills to challenge opponents.

Climbing the all-time free-kick chart

A remarkable milestone: Saturday's strike elevated Messi's career free-kick total to 67 goals. This leaves him just three behind Pelé (70) and 10 short of the record-holder Juninho Pernambucano (77).

He recently surpassed David Beckham (65) and has now overtaken Victor Legrotaglie and Ronaldinho (66). Cristiano Ronaldo lags behind with 64.
