The Serie A title for the 2024-25 season will be determined by a play-off if Napoli and Inter Milan finish level on points.
In 2022, the league reintroduced a rule that requires teams competing for the title or fighting relegation to face off in a play-off if they end with identical points, disregarding goal difference or head-to-head records.
Napoli currently leads Inter by one point entering the final weekend.
If Napoli loses their final home match against Cagliari and Inter draws away at Como, both teams would finish with 79 points after 38 Serie A matches.
The two teams would then play a one-off match on May 26 at either San Siro in Milan or, for safety reasons, Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
A play-off could also decide the relegation spots.
Like England's Premier League, Serie A features 20 teams and relegates three.
Currently, 17th-placed Lecce (playing away at Lazio) and 18th-placed Empoli (hosting Hellas Verona) both have 31 points, while Parma in 16th has 33 points and Hellas Verona in 15th has 34 points.
If a relegation play-off occurs, it will be a two-legged tie, with each team playing one leg at home.
Both legs must be completed before June 1.
The only previous Serie A play-off was a relegation decider in the 2022-23 season, where Spezia lost 3-1 to Hellas Verona at a neutral venue.
For all other instances where teams tie on points, the head-to-head record decides the positions.
