After Sunday's 3-1 defeat at AS Roma dashed their hopes of playing in Europe next season, AC Milan manager Sergio Conceição said that things had not gone their way in what had been a turbulent campaign.

It has been a terrible season for Milan, who are sitting in ninth place and are now out of contention for any European competition next season.

Roma — whose 19-match unbeaten Serie A run under Claudio Ranieri was only broken by Atalanta last Monday — got off to a flying start, and their third-minute opener was fully deserved.

Matías Soulé’s inswinging corner dropped into a busy six-yard box and was met eagerly by Gianluca Mancini, who rose above Fikayo Tomori and headed past Mike Maignan.

Given that Roma had scored exactly one goal in each of their last nine league games, Milan would have been confident of a response. However, Santiago Giménez made matters worse by elbowing Mancini off the ball and consequently receiving a straight red card.

As expected, the hosts dominated possession, but didn’t look likely to extend their lead.

After Álex Jiménez's shot was saved by Mile Svilar and fell to João Félix, the former Benfica player scored his first Serie A goal by shooting into the open net.

The personnel disadvantage continued to be a non-factor after half-time, with chances at either end showing that it was anyone’s game.

That was until Roma’s Leandro Paredes produced a moment of magic, audaciously choosing to shoot from a long-range free kick and stunningly finding the inside of the near post with a thunderous effort.

Ranieri’s side initially held on well against a tired-looking Milan, but the final ten minutes brought more chances for the Rossoneri, including Rafael Leão’s one-on-one that Svilar stopped.

However, Roma rallied and struck a final blow on the counter as Maignan's double save was rendered futile when Bryan Cristante fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area.

Despite his heroics since taking over in November, Ranieri has always made it clear that this is merely a hiatus from retirement, and he will be fondly remembered after winning his last game at the Stadio Olimpico.

Milan are now just two points from seventh place, but the only way they can end up there is if cup winners Bologna, who are guaranteed a place in Europe, finish below them. This means that a European spot is now beyond the Rossoneri’s reach.
