Manchester United slipped to their 14th Premier League defeat of the season - their most in a single campaign since 1989-90 - after a 4-1 loss at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Despite the absence of ailing manager Eddie Howe, Newcastle boosted their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League by finishing fourth in the table on 56 points.

With Howe in hospital with an illness, in-form Newcastle showed no sign of losing their recent momentum and took the lead in the 24th minute through a fine Sandro Tonali volley.

However, the visitors responded well and scored a superb goal of their own in the 37th minute through Argentinian striker Alejandro Garnacho, but Harvey Barnes restored Newcastle's lead early in the second half.

Barnes added a third on 64 minutes before an error from debutant Altay Bayindir in the away goal allowed Bruno Guimaraes to grab a late fourth as Newcastle moved above Manchester City and Manchester United dropped to 14th.

Newcastle went into the game looking to complete the league double against their opponents for the first time since 1930-31.

However, the task is not as daunting as it once was. They have been beaten home and away by four teams this season - the most times that has happened to Manchester United in a single campaign since 1957-58.
