Nearly 15 years on from locking horns in the 2009-10 Champions League final, Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich and Serie A champions Inter Milan square off for a place in this year's semi-finals, starting with Tuesday's quarter-final first leg at the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany's men triumphed in an all-German battle with Bayer Leverkusen to advance to the final eight, while the Nerazzurri ended Feyenoord's European journey in the last 16.

When were the last three meetings and what happened?

Milito Buries Bayern's Title Dream

In the summer of 2010, Munich not only eliminated defending champions Manchester United on their way to the Champions League final, but also kept a clean sheet in the semifinal against Olympique Lyon. With their league and cup wins against Werder Bremen puffed out, they traveled to Madrid – and suffered a bitter defeat in the final.

FCB struggled against a compact Inter and conceded the first goal from José Mourinho's team. Goalscorer Diego Milito then snatched a brace in the 70th minute, tying FCB defender Daniel van Buyten's legs in knots. With his sixth goal of the current Champions League season, "Il Principe" was the man of the evening – and Bayern's dream of a treble was shattered.

Pandev Prevents Revenge

Half a year later, Milito was absent from the Champions League round of 16 due to a thigh injury, and Bayern were hoping for revenge. In the first leg, Mario Gomez scored shortly before the end at Giuseppe Meazza, and the 1-0 lead gave Bayern Munich a good start to the return match three weeks later. The lead was lost after just three minutes, but Bayern hit back after Samuel Eto'o's early goal and were on course for the quarterfinals until the final stages.

But then, in the 88th minute, Goran Pandev appeared on the right side of the penalty area and, from full speed, curled the ball into the top corner. FC Bayern lost again with the 2-3 defeat, and after their DFB Cup semi-final exit against FC Schalke 04, they also lost the second of three title chances within a matter of weeks.

Champions League, 2022/23 - Group Stage

The fact that the record is still positive for Munich ahead of this rematch is thanks to the most recent encounters in the fall of 2022. In the Champions League group stage, FCB won both the first and second legs, both 2-0. The currently in-form Leroy Sané was the deciding factor in the first leg, while Benjamin Pavard was able to get his name on the scoresheet in the second leg. The Frenchman, now playing for Milan, is just one of the many links between Inter and FC Bayern, as the history of this glorious duel shows.
