There was more frustration for the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan faithful as Sevilla let a lead slip away to lose 2-1 for the second successive game, with Atletico Madrid's stoppage-time winner ending their winless run at six games.
And history looked set to repeat itself after just seven minutes when Ruben Vargas and Adria Pedrosa combined on the left and the latter fired a ball into the box. The ball was cleared, but only to Lucien Agoume, who fired past Jan Oblak and into the top right-hand corner to open his account for 2024/25.
Things could have gone even better for the Sevillistas soon after, as Oblak had to react quickly to palm away Chidera Ejuke's attempted pass into the box, only for the lurking Agoume, still on the back of his earlier strike, to palm the ball away.
That proved crucial in the 23rd minute, when Atletico were awarded a penalty when Conor Gallagher was brought down by Loic Bade at the end of a clever move. Julian Alvarez stepped up to fire the ball into the bottom right-hand corner, sending Orjan Nyland the wrong way.
That aside, it was a largely attritional end to the first half, but Nyland also earned his wages early in the second, when Giuliano Simeone latched onto a defence-splitting pass in the area. He unleashed a shot on goal, but Nyland was alert enough to palm it away for a corner.
The hosts, who had seen their lead evaporate in last week's derby in Seville, continued to match their visitors in terms of intensity as the hour mark approached. However, they lacked the finishing touch to regain the lead. For Atletico, Rodrigo Riquelme cut an influential figure in the closing stages, but he was well marked by Kike Salas, who first outmuscled him in an aerial duel before blocking a shot from close range.
Bade then headed over inches from a corner, and it was a costly miss as an impressive solo run by Pablo Barrios culminated in a low shot over Nyland in the third minute of stoppage time.
Having once again surrendered an early lead, Sevilla's endgame between now and 2024/25 now promises little more than a battle for a top-half finish.
The Rojillos are now virtually out of contention for a European spot, while Atletico - whose title aspirations have been diminished in recent weeks - capitalised on the mistakes made by leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid over the weekend. Simeone's men are seven points adrift of safety with eight games remaining.
