Girona vs Alaves

Match preview

Girona have not won in La Liga since the start of February and have taken just three points from their last seven games, with draws against Celta Vigo, Espanyol and Valencia the only points they have earned.

Michel's side go into the game on the back of a 4-1 defeat at Barcelona and their recent struggles have left them 13th in La Liga, with a record of nine wins, seven draws and 13 defeats to their name and 34 points.

Girona are only seven points clear of the relegation zone, so they have a lot of work to do to stay out of the bottom three, and another poor result this weekend would be damaging for the Catalan side.

The White and Reds were so impressive last season that they finished third in the table and secured Champions League football for the 2024-25 season, but this has been a more testing campaign for the club.

Girona have taken 21 points from their 14 home league games in 2024-25, and they will welcome an Alaves side who have taken 11 points from their 15 away games this term.

Alaves go into the game on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano, a result that leaves them 17th in the standings, level on points with 18th-placed Leganes.

The Basque side also had an impressive season in 2024-25, finishing 10th, but like Girona they have struggled this term and are firmly in the relegation battle at this stage.

However, Eduardo Coudet's side have lost just one of their last four league games, with draws at Mallorca and Las Palmas coming on the back of an impressive home win over Villarreal on 8 March.

Alaves, however, have failed to overcome Girona in the Spanish top flight since May 2019, losing two of their last three meetings with the Catalan side, including a 1-0 defeat in January 2025.

The Blue and Whites also suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Girona in the 2023-24 campaign.

Team News

Girona will be able to welcome Donny van de Beek back into their squad on Saturday after the midfielder served the suspension that ruled him out of their last meeting with Barcelona.

Bojan Miovski, Ivan Martin and Abel Ruiz are still out of the Catalan side, while Ricard Artero and Bryan Gil face late fitness tests, meaning the hosts could be missing five players.

Portu and Van de Beek are expected to come into the side, which could mean that Arnaut Danjuma, who scored against Barcelona last time out, gets a start in midfield.

As for Alaves, Nahuel Tenaglia will miss out through suspension after picking up a bookable offence against Rayo.

However, the visitors have not reported any new fitness problems, which could mean that there is only one change from the last game, with Moussa Diarra likely to come in at the back.

Kike Garcia has been in impressive form for Alaves in the 2024-25 season, finding the back of the net on 11 occasions in the Spanish top flight, and we expect him to continue in the middle of the park on Saturday.
