Ángel Di María has addressed the rumors linking him to a summer move to Club América, dismissing the speculation. The Argentine has made 32 appearances for Benfica this season across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists.
León's exclusion from the FIFA Club World Cup has sparked discussions about potential replacement teams for the tournament, with América emerging as a possible candidate. This led to speculation that Di María, whose contract with Benfica expires in June, could join the Águilas for the competition. However, the former Real Madrid star quickly shut down those rumors.
"Once again, we’re starting with lies, it’s a shame that they come to invent things," Di María posted on social media, calling out the Argentine media outlet that spread the report.
Di María's uncertain future with Benfica is partially behind recent rumors, along with some potential marketing ties. The Liga MX club will start using Adidas for their uniforms in the next tournament, and it was reported that the brand would pay part of the Argentine's salary to bring him to the current Liga MX champion.
During his time with the Argentina national team, Di María made 145 appearances and scored 31 goals, debuting in 2008 and retiring after winning the 2024 Copa América. At both the club and international levels, he is one of the most decorated players in history, with 37 titles. His most notable achievements include the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles with Argentina, a UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid, and five Ligue 1 championships with PSG.
While they await the decision regarding a possible invitation from FIFA to compete in the 2025 Club World Cup, Jardine's team will host Tigres next Saturday on Matchday 13 of the Clausura 2025. In this tournament, they currently sit at the top of the standings with 27 points.
