Sweden suffer shock friendly loss to Luxembourg

The year 2025 began in disappointing fashion for Sweden, who were beaten 1-0 by Luxembourg in an international friendly at the Stade de Luxembourg.

Visiting coach Jon Dahl Tomasson named a strong starting XI, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga leading the line and Robin Olsen between the sticks.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper had little to do with the Luxembourg goal midway through the first half when Danel Sinani's deep corner was met at the back post by Seid Korac, who headed the ball through Olsen's legs.

Despite the firepower up front, Sweden struggled to create anything of note throughout the 90 minutes, registering just two shots on target to the home side's seven.

Things could have been worse for the 65th-ranked Swedes in the second half when Alessio Curci rounded Olsen but Isak Hien's goal-saving tackle prevented him from firing into an empty net.

Vincent Thill also went close late on as Luxembourg pushed for a second.

But one goal was enough for the home side, who recorded their first win over Sweden in seven attempts.

It was an embarrassing start to the calendar year for Tomasson and his side, who beat Luxembourg 8-0 in their last meeting in 2017.

The Swedes will need to regroup ahead of a home friendly against Northern Ireland in Solna on Tuesday.
