An own goal and a penalty in the last eight minutes earned Aston Villa a 3-1 win at Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Belgium on Tuesday.

Leon Bailey put Villa ahead on three minutes and Maxim De Cuyper levelled nine minutes later. But Brugge's Brandon Mechele scored an own goal eight minutes from time and Marco Asensio converted from the spot with two minutes remaining.

The teams will meet again in the second leg at Villa Park next Wednesday to decide who will face Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.

"I am happy, but calm. There are still 90 minutes to play," Emery told reporters.

"We are not yet in the quarter-final. I know how difficult each match is and how it can change."

The two sides met in the Champions League, where Bruges beat Aston Villa 1-0. That defeat left Brugge without a win in three rounds of the official competition, two of which they lost. However, the Brugge coach admitted that he could see the bright side.

"The way we played was good again," Brugge manager Nicky Hayen told his players in a huddle after the final whistle.

"The only thing we can blame is that we gave the goals away ourselves."
