Inter Milan vs Lazio

Match preview

Inter have had an eventful February so far, drawing the Milan derby, going down 3-0 in Florence and losing the Derby d'Italia to Juventus, but they have also beaten Fiorentina and Genoa at the San Siro.

A late goal from captain Lautaro Martinez sent Genoa packing as the Nerazzurri moved to the top of Serie A, while Napoli's subsequent defeat at Como leaves them one point clear ahead of Saturday's big showdown in Naples.

Despite losing to their city rivals in last month's Supercoppa Italiana final, Simone Inzaghi's side are still capable of a treble this season.

With Inter not only leading the Scudetto race, but also facing Milan's Feyenoord in the last 16 of the Champions League, the nine-time winners continued their recent Coppa Italia campaign.

As usual, they arrived in the last eight due to European commitments, and first-half goals from Marko Arnautovic and Kristjan Asllani saw them overcome Udinese.

Inzaghi now takes on his old club, for whom he first played and then coached a club-record 197 times in Serie A, winning 108 of them, after overseeing an incredible six-goal success the last time the two sides met.

In the midst of their best run of form this season, Lazio were stopped in their tracks by Inter in mid-December when they were thrashed 6-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

The capital club have won just two of their last nine league meetings with their counterparts from the second city, who have enjoyed the upper hand since Inzaghi's arrival.

Like their quarter-final hosts, Lazio were given a bye in the last 16 before a hat-trick from Tijjani Noslin helped them to a 3-1 win over Napoli.

The seven-time Coppa Italia winners have since progressed to the knockout stages of the Europa League, where they will face Viktoria Pilsen for a place in the last eight.

For now, Marco Baroni's men must overcome Inter and book a return to the San Siro in April, when they would face Milan in a two-legged semi-final.

The Biancocelesti, who are currently in the top four of Serie A, will have to step up their game if they are to beat the Italian champions.

Already without first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who underwent thumb surgery last week, and French striker Marcus Thuram, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has a new injury concern for his side against Genoa.

Ex-Lazio striker Joaquin Correa was only able to play the first half with a knee sprain, leaving either Marko Arnautovic or Mehdi Taremi to come in, while Carlos Augusto and Davide Frattesi remain doubts.

With a potential title decider on Saturday, Inzaghi could make further changes: Stefan de Vrij, Piotr Zielinski and Hakan Calhanoglu are all in contention to come off the bench.

Meanwhile, Lazio are still without top scorer Taty Castellanos through injury - meaning Coppa hat-trick hero Tijjani Noslin could start up front - but influential midfielder Nicolo Rovella is back after serving a one-match ban.

Elseid Hysaj and former Inter midfielder Matias Vecino join Castellanos on the sidelines, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru picked up a knock against Venezia and could also miss out.

It remains to be seen whether Ivan Provedel will return after being dropped on Saturday; Cup goalkeeper Christos Mandas took the gloves at the Stadio Penzo, but Marco Baroni has since stated that Provedel remains his number one.
