Manchester United have suffered a nightmare week with injuries like which has rarely been seen.
Having already lost Lisandro Martinez for the rest of the season, and seen Luke Shaw suffer yet another setback, star youngster Amad Diallo has now seen his campaign end early after an accident in training, and Kobbie Mainoo be ruled out for a number of weeks.
On top of that Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer have also been ruled out, and both Leny Yoro and Christian Eriksen were further absentees ahead of the loss at Tottenham on Sunday.
Amad Diallo has suffered his season-ending injury, with ankle ligament damage suffered in training this week in a significant blow to manager Ruben Amorim.
“Amad was alone [when he got injured],” the manager said on Sunday. “He was doing a tackle. The feet were stuck in the grass.”
Manchester United hope Mainoo will be able to return in a matter of weeks, rather than months.
The midfielder picked up the knock during training, and the initial prognosis was for a two-to-three-week absence, but that has now been revised to up to six weeks.
The summer signing has been a mainstay in Amorim’s side but missed the win over Spurs after picking up a knock in training. It left Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as they only two fit senior midfielders for the trip to Spurs, while teenager Jack Moorhouse was named on the bench.
Leny Yoro was a surprise absentee at Spurs, with Ruben Amorim confirming that the young defender was one of two players who were struck down with illness ahead of the game.
He said: “Some players felt sickness during training. We will try everything to have the players fit. In one week, we lost so many players ... Leny and Chris were sick, so they will recover.”
