Kylian Mbappé was the star of the show as Real Madrid dumped Manchester City out of the 2024/25 Champions League in emphatic fashion. The Frenchman netted his second hat-trick for Los Blancos since joining from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
The real Kylian Mbappé
After a relatively slow start to this time in the Spanish capital, the 26-year-old is beginning to show the goalscoring form that has been expected of him all along. Mbappé started 2025 with a three-game goal drought but has since netted 14 times in 11 appearances, taking him onto 28 goals in 38 games for the season so far.
Following the victory over City, the France captain was asked whether he would be targeting scoring 50 goals in his debut season.
“I want to and I always believe I can! I have total belief in myself, but I don’t want to set limits. If I can score 50, perfect…but if I can score more than that, I’m going to try”.
Mbappé aiming for Real Madrid milestone only one man has ever achieved
Only one player in the history of Real Madrid has ever scored 50 goals or more in a season, and it probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to discover his name.
Cristiano Ronaldo not only reached that milestone but did so on no fewer than six occasions, in consecutive seasons between 2010/11 and 2015/16. The Portuguese even hit 60 goals on two occasions (60 in 2011/12 and 61 in 2014/15).
40-goal seasons for Real Madrid
Some other high-profile names have tried and come up just short. Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskás, Hugo Sánchez and Karim Benzema all scored at least 40 goals in a season for Madrid, which certainly appears to be a realistic objective for Mbappé to match.
