The Dallas Mavericks have been the center of controversy in the NBA since the trade deadline, and now have a decision to make; do they bring back superstar guard Kyrie Irving long-term, or let him test free agency. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, Mavs GM Nico Harrison hinted at giving Irving a lucrative extension, as he fits their win-now vision.
"He fits our timeframe," Harrison said, referring to the addition of big man Anthony Davis. "If you pair him with Kyrie [Irving] and the rest of the guys, he fits right along with our timeframe to win now and win in the future. And the future to me is three, four years from now."
Marks then dove into the specifics of what contracts Irving could get, with the lowest being three-years, $176 million, or the largest being five-years, $313 million.
“That timeline only exists if Irving signs a new contract,” Marks wrote. “The 32-year-old is eligible for a five-year, $313 million contract if the option for next season is declined, but the most logical option is a three-year, $176 million max contract that lines up with the remainder of Davis' deal.”
According to NBA executives, Irving probably has the most negotiation leverage with his current team out of all potential free agents, so he might be able to take whatever offer he likes best.
In the end, if the Mavs don’t extend Davis, which is probably what will happen, then they will go with the latter choice. Harrison is only focused on winning in the next three to four years, and if he can get his veteran stars’ contracts to match up with that timeline, he’ll probably do it. Hopefully they do win, otherwise their fanbase will never forgive them.
