Benfica held a determined AS Monaco to a 3-3 draw in the second leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off on Tuesday, and won 4-3 on aggregate to book their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Benfica, who held a one-goal advantage from the first leg, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a close-range strike from winger Kerem Aktürkoglu following a fine pass from Vangelis Pavlidis.
But Monaco had the hosts on the ropes for much of the game and midfielder Takumi Minamino equalised 10 minutes later with a simple finish, before Eliesse Ben Seghir put them ahead after the break with a stunning first-time shot inside the right-hand post.
Benfica were then awarded a penalty and Pavlidis coolly converted from the spot to make it 2-2, before Monaco substitute George Ilenikhena and Benfica's Orkun Kökçü added late goals.
Benfica will now face either Liverpool or Barcelona in the last 16, depending on Friday's draw.
Monaco last reached the last 16 of the competition in 2017, when they reached the semi-finals.
Benfica reached the quarter-finals in 2022 and 2023 before crashing out at the group stage last year.
