Feyenoord knocked AC Milan out of the Champions League on Tuesday as Julian Carranza's goal in a 1-1 draw secured a 2-1 aggregate victory and a place in the last 16 of the competition, with the hosts having Theo Hernández sent off.

Milan went on the attack from the outset. Gimenez won a corner in the opening seconds, gesturing to the home fans behind the goal to make more noise, and moments later the Mexican gave them plenty of reason to do just that.

From a short corner, Christian Pulisic whipped a pass towards the far post, where Malick Thiaw headed back across goal for Gimenez to nod over.

Gimenez, who joined Milan from Feyenoord just two weeks ago, was almost apologetic, but the San Siro crowd more than made up for his lack of celebration.

Milan looked the more likely to take the lead before the break, and Gimenez played in João Félix, who curled his effort over the bar.

Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther saved another shot from Félix and Hernandez could only turn the rebound into the side-netting as the visitors failed to find the target in the first half.

Feyenoord's chances were boosted six minutes into the second half when Hernandez was booked for a second simulation offence, but the visitors continued to struggle to create any real chances.

Antoni Milambo fired a shot and then a header over the bar, but it was Feyenoord who finally found the net with their first shot on target.

Hugo Bueno's delightful ball from the edge of the area found its way to the far post, where substitute Carranza rose unchallenged to power a header past goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Milan desperately pushed for a goal to take the tie into extra time and Thiaw's powerful header was well saved by the goalkeeper as Feyenoord withstood late pressure.

Feyenoord defender Givairo Reed was shown a straight red card after the final whistle as tempers flared at the San Siro and Feyenoord will now face either Inter Milan or Arsenal in the last 16, with their opponents to be drawn on Friday.
