Mets $102 million superstar dishes on uncertain future in Queens after 2025 season

What does the future hold for the New York Mets' Edwin Díaz?
Díaz, 30, signed a record-setting five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets after his fantastic 2022 season. That deal included an opt-out after three seasons, so 2025 could in theory be the closer's last season in Queens.
So far, the deal hasn't worked out the way the Mets would have hoped, and that's due in large part to the unfortunate injury Díaz suffered during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He returned in 2024 and posted a 3.52 ERA with 20 saves in 54 appearances/
Whether or not Díaz chooses to opt out will rely heavily on his performance this year. Coming off an up-and-down 2024 season, one would have to think he'd need to be fairly dominant to have a shot at earning a deal that would be worth more than the Mets are committed to paying him.
But for his part, Díaz doesn't seem to be thinking too far ahead of himself. He was asked directly about his future with the Mets during opening week of spring training.
“That’s something I gotta look at after the season with my agent, see where we’re at and make a decision,” Díaz said Friday, per Newsday’s Tim Healey. “Right now, I’m not thinking about that. I want to help this team win. I love this team. I want to stay here because I love the team, I love the coaches, I love the ownership, I love everyone. I feel really good right here."
If Díaz opts in, he'll be guaranteed two years and $38 million ($37 million in base salary, plus the $1 million buyout if the Mets decline his 2028 club option. Díaz's contract also includes $26.5 million of deferred money, to be paid in yearly installments from 2033 to 2042.
While the focus may rightly be on first baseman Pete Alonso's decision at the end of the season, Díaz's will be an interesting one to keep an eye on as well.
