The Chicago Cubs have made a pair of blockbuster trades this offseason. They acquired Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly. Could they trade for another star before the season starts?
The San Diego Padres may be trying to trade Michael King or Dylan Cease. However, there is another pitcher who could be of great value to the Cubs. FanSided's Zach Pressnell proposed this trade that would bring Robert Suarez to Chicago:
Cubs receive: Robert Suarez
Padres receive: catcher/first baseman Moises Ballesteros and right-handed pitcher Jack Neely
"The Padres don't necessarily need to trade Suarez, so a trade package to land the flame-throwing closer would need to 'wow' San Diego beyond belief," wrote Pressnell. "This package does exactly that while also staying within the Cubs' price range."
Suarez would not be the closer for the Cubs as he was for the Padres. The Cubs promised Pressly he would be their closer to get the trade over the line, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. However, Suarez was dominant out of the bullpen and held a grasp on the closer's role even after the Padres acquisition of Tanner Scott.
He was an All-Star for the first time and had a 2.77 ERA with 36 saves last season. Even if he is not the closer, he would likely become the best setup man in the league. Manager Craig Counsell once had Devin Williams setting up Josh Hader in Milwaukee. Suarez and Pressly could be just as lethal a combination.
