Stadion An der Alten Forsterei

Union Berlin vs Borussia M'bach

Match preview

The home team dominated proceedings against Hoffenheim, creating nearly three xG, generating six big chances and producing 17 of their 22 attempts from inside the penalty area.

Union scored as many goals last weekend as they had in their previous seven matches, and their six good chances represent 15% of the total they have created in the league all season.

Coach Steffen Baumgart's side may be bottom of the table, but they are 10 points clear of 16th-placed Heidenheim, who occupy the relegation play-off spot, and should be confident of avoiding relegation to the 2. Bundesliga.

The win over Hoffenheim was their second in four matches, and the seven points they have collected in that time are more than they had managed in their previous 11 top-flight matches.

Despite winning just once in their last seven games at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, they have only lost twice in 10 home matches in the 2024/25 season.

As for Borussia Monchengladbach, they were lucky to take any points from their encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Eagles wasting a number of chances from the penalty spot and hitting the woodwork on two occasions.

The visitors' defence has looked vulnerable at times this season, with the club having conceded 39 league goals this term, the second-most of any team in the Bundesliga.

The Fohlen took all three points when they beat Union 1-0 in the reverse fixture on 28 September, their first win over the club in nine attempts, five of which they have won.

Gerardo Seoane's men are unbeaten in three Bundesliga matches - two of which have been victories - and their run means they are just five points behind fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.

However, while Borussia Monchengladbach have won two of their last four league games away from home, they have lost five, drawn two and won just two of their last nine away from home.

Team News

Union Berlin will be without suspended full-back Christopher Trimmel and centre-back Kevin Vogt, so expect Danilho Doekhi and Diogo Leite to be flanked by Josip Juranovic and Robert Skov at the back.

Janik Haberer and Rani Khedira could start in a double pivot with midfielder Aljoscha Kemlein sidelined until the end of February.

Winger Benedict Hollerbach scored twice against Hoffenheim but is out until early March with a foot injury and his absence could mean Tim Skarke gets a start out wide.

Borussia Mönchengladbach's injury list is relatively light, but they will need to find solutions in midfield and up front with winger Franck Honorat and midfielder Rocco Reitz unavailable.

Julian Weigl has often partnered Reitz, but the latter's injury could see Philipp Sander come into the side.

Tim Kleindienst is almost certain to start as the visitors' striker, with wide forwards Nathan N'Goumou and Robin Hack likely to provide support.

Possible starting lineup

Union Berlin possible starting lineup:

Ronnow; Juranovic, Doekhi, Leite, Skov; Haberer, Khedira; Jeong, Ljubicic, Skarke; Ilic

Borussia Monchengladbach possible starting lineup:

Nicolas; Scally, Itakura, Friedrich, Ullrich; Sander, Weigl; N'Goumou, Stoger, Hack; Kleindienst
