The Manchester Evening News pointed out that Manchester United's performance in the FA Cup and the Europa League for the rest of the season may determine their operations in the transfer market this summer.
In addition, Lille's Angel Gomes and Jonathan David's contracts expire at the end of this season and have not yet signed new contracts. Manchester United may once again strengthen the lineup by introducing free agents.
Manchester United defeated Leicester City 2-1 after a tough game on Friday night local time and advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup, maintaining the hope of winning two trophies this season.
Currently, the Red Devils are ranked 13th in the Premier League standings, 14 points away from the top four and 12 points ahead of the relegation zone. Therefore, their Premier League journey this season may soon lose suspense.
In recent years, Manchester United has established itself as a cup team, and they have the opportunity to continue this trend in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
Manchester United currently needs to act cautiously to comply with the profit and sustainability rules of the Premier League. They had to cut spending in January, so players like Rashford and Anthony were loaned out.
If financial issues become an obstacle for Manchester United again this summer, they may need to consider the free agent market. Manchester United has used this recruitment method in the past, signing Eriksen on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.
Regardless of whether they can offer Champions League qualification when attracting players to transfer, Manchester United may adopt this strategy again this summer. This is because Lille's Angel Gomes and Jonathan David are out of contract at the end of this season and have not yet signed a new contract.
Although Jonathan David only recently turned 25, he has proven his strength in scoring goals, scoring 72 goals for Lille since the start of the 2022/23 season.
Of course, Jonathan David's outstanding performance in scoring means that many clubs will pay attention to his situation, and many of them are expected to participate in the Champions League next season. Manchester United's only hope of achieving this goal is to win the Europa League.
Manchester United may say goodbye to Eriksen at the end of the season when his contract expires, which means they need a replacement to strengthen the midfield. Casemiro is also likely to transfer.
Angel Gomes, 24, has made impressive progress since leaving Old Trafford nearly five years ago and made his England debut earlier this season, and his passing range and agile movement will bring control to Manchester United's midfield.
United need to replace Eriksen and Casemiro, who are about to turn 33, with younger players, and Angel Gomes is nearly a decade younger than them. Ineos also favors young players, and the England star fits that criteria.
After years of overspending and serious mistakes in recruiting, Manchester United may be able to strengthen two key positions without paying a transfer fee this summer.
